Safari Uganda in the southwest, to encounter with giant silver gorillas and sparkling golden monkeys.  You can only find all these in the one and only Mgahinga National Park that lies in the far western Uganda, in the Bufumbira county of Kisoro district. Mgahinga National Park is the second home to the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas after Bwindi Impenetrable National Park that roam freely in the forest of Mgahinga National Park.

Mgahinga National Park is a protected under the Virunga conservation area. The Virunga Conservation area covers a total area of about 434km2. Virunga conservation area consists of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda. The Virunga conservation area is the only celebrated area in the world that hosts Uganda Rwanda Congo mountain gorilla trekking Safaris. Each of these countries affectionately protects its own portion of the Virungas.

Given Uganda’s share of the Park, Mgahinga National Park covers 8% of the Virunga conservation area with an area of about 33.7sq.km. Mgahinga National Park outspreads between 2,227meters (7306ft) and 4,127meters (13540ft) above sea-level.

Mgahinga National Park was declared a sanctuary in 1930 by the British administration and gazetted as a park in 1991 governed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). UWA took over this park to protect the rare primate mountain gorillas and golden monkeys that inhabit the dense forest. Mgahinga National Park and Bwindi National Park are the only parks in Uganda that protect mountain gorillas hence hosting a very good number of visitors for unforgettable Uganda gorilla trekking safaris.

These three Virunga mountains include; Mountain Muhabura (4,127meters), Gahinga (3,474meters) and Mountain Sabinyo (3645meters). Mountain Muhabura and Mountain Gahinga originates along the Uganda Rwanda boarder while Sabinyo is positioned on Uganda Rwanda Congo boarder. These peaks found within the park boundaries provide an outstanding background to this gorgeous scenery.

Mountain Sabinyo is the oldest volcano that serves rewarding, best and amazing hikes. Climbing to its summit is simply entertaining and it’s the favorite of all. Mountain Sabinyo peak is the only place or spot where you set your foot in 3 countries at once; Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. It also has a swamp crater that is 180meters.

Besides Mgahingas’ most striking features three Virunga ranges that lie along the border region of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. The park serves also rewarding hikes to the interesting caves, golden monkey trekking to the tourists that safari to Uganda and cultural encounters for the indigenous Batwa Pygmies.

The Batwa people are among the first indigenous tribes is characterized of hunter gathers, living in the forest first people and their ancient knowledge of its secrets remains unrivaled.

Mgahinga National Park has one Gorilla habituated group identified as Nyakagezi. Nyakagezi consists of 9 members; 3 adults females, 2 silver backs, 2 juveniles and 2 infants. Other animals within the park include; bush pigs, jackals, forest buffaloes, and hundreds of bird’s species, and paradise fly catcher.
